Review
“[T]his is a set well worth having in the science prep room. It covers a wide range of topics relating to science, technology and society from the twentieth century. The century is divided up into its ten decades and in each decade there is a succinct account of about nine or ten incidents or inventions that made an impact in that era....[t]his book is particularly welcome in looking back at the massive contribution that science made to society over the last 100 years.” --A decade organization allows for a smooth timeline of events charting how evolving social, cultural and political events of the last 100 years have been affected by changing theories and realities in all the sciences. Photos, illustrations, and excellent bibliographic reference for further reading conclude an essential student's reference.

“Where do I go to find the perfect example of the effects of a scientific discovery on a large segment of society? Or, in a similar vein, how can I make the international nature of scientific feats appealing to my students? As teachers, we are constantly required to integrate the contributions of science with their societal implications, but we have few resources at our disposal. Similarly, we expect students to be able to to describe how science has influenced their lives in the present century, but limited research materials are available to them as well. This reference work provides a much-needed analysis of the intricate relationships between science and society....The phenomenal scope that this reference text covers is impressive. Among the gems in it are unique examples that will trigger the imagination of students. Every science department should have a copy of this book; our teaching can only be improved exponentially when we incorporate and integrate real-life examples.” --School Science Review

“This reference text will give middle and high school students a helpful jumping off point when they search for research paper topics. Teachers can use these topics to integrate science and social studies into the curriculum. Each entry provides just enough information to pique the curiosity and most likely will encourage the student to do a little more digging on the subject. This book is a good interdisciplinary approach to the major discoveries of the last one hundred years and is presented in an easy-to-read style with many photographs and suggested readings. Recommended for public libraries as well.” --SB&F
