Book Description
Jean-François Lyotard's late work reveals a deep suspicion of the ‘inhuman’: the process by which we are dehumanised by the forces of ‘development’ (advanced capitalism), and in extreme cases, even find those forces planning to replace us with computer technology. Given the power wielded by ‘techno-science’, Lyotard fears for our future, and call on us to resist the drift towards ‘inhumanism’. If we look around us, however inhumanism is already with us in many forms: medical technology. Artificial Intelligence and Artificial Life are three obvious examples. The boundary between humanity and machine is becoming progressively more blurred, and there are many willing to defend this development, regarding it as where our future lies. At stake this debate is our very conception of what it means to be human. Lyotard’s question, “what if what is ‘proper&146; to humankind were to inhabited by the inhuman?”, is one with critical implications for us all.
Review
“Extremely important for everyone interested in issues of (post)modern literature, art, and music.” —Hans Ulrich Gumbrecht, Stanford University
“In this collection of 17 essays, all written or presented between 1980 and 1989, Lyotard addresses a variety of topics related to the transition from modernity to postmodernity. . . . Addressing issues of relevance to art, music, literature, and philosophy, Lyotard’s collection will be of interest to students, scholars, and practitioners in each of these areas as well as to a general readership interested in aesthetic postmodernity and the avante-garde.” —Choice
