最近恰好也在看Two Concept of Liberty，中译本此处译得很含糊，原文应当是 The world that we encounter in ordinary experience is one in which we are faced with choices between ends equally ultimate, and claims equally absolute, the realization of some of which must inevitably involve the sacrifice of others.
在这句话之后就有柏林的一个解释，我读的文本来自 Liberty, Henry Hardy (ed.), p213-214，不知DKY兄的难解来自引文有误还是其他原因？
只是引文方面的功夫，柏林的书读得不够深入不敢妄断，权当抛砖引玉了吧。

我们在日常经验中遭遇世界，在这个世界中，我们平等地并绝对地面临许多选择，某些选择的实现必然不可避免地意味着另一些选择的牺牲。

多谢，看了你的版本就好判断一些了。我的是在伊格尔顿《The meaning of life》中的引文，伊格尔顿拿来和马克思韦伯的一段话比较。

伊格尔顿引文出处：Four essays on liberty（oxford 1969），168，可能此书中表述异于Two concept of liberty。

Max Weber 的话是“The ultimately possible to life are irreconcilable,and hence their struggle can never brought to conclusion.'

伊格尔顿的大致意思是”There are moral problems,to which no solutions can be had."
