Book Description
In 1965 Thomas Kuhn and Karl Popper met at the University of London to stage what has become the most important philosophical debate of the 20th century. Today we glibly say that Kuhn finally put an end to the bad old days of positivism, objectivism and perhaps even modernism. However, Steve Fuller argues, nothing could be further from the truth. In Fuller’s provocative retelling, Kuhn defended the integrity of science in a state of political captivity, whereas Popper simply argued that science must never find itself in such a state.

Kuhn's modest image of science proved attractive because it broke down barriers that traditionally subordinated these disciplines to the prestigious natural sciences. For Kuhn, a science need not exert control over the world, it need only control itself. Popper drew attention to the downside of this image, especially the overriding value it placed on conformity, which Kuhn himself likened to an authoritarian mindset. Nevertheless, in the '60s and '70s, an era that uniquely combined generous funding for academic research with increasing political pressure on dissenters, Kuhn's image won the day. Its legacy has been manifold but mostly for the worse.

Building on his controversial 'philosophical history' of Kuhn's The Structure of Scientific Revolutions, Steve Fuller adds new insights from the Kuhn archives, as well as recent Popper scholarship, to uncover the intellectual, political and even religious issues that separated Kuhn and Popper. As science re-negotiates its social contract in the post-Cold War era, it is vital that we finally get straight on why the wrong guy won.
