【英语】 请教这句话里examines the irrelevance of the distinction为何意?

这是Contemporary European Cinema一书中,第二章的一节内容. 请问这句话,抛去定语从句不分析,是想表达"auteur cinema和art cinema有没有区别并不重要"这样的意思吗?
另外,有没有懂欧洲电影的老师,能否告知art cinema的商业性作何理解?

应该不是. 似乎是指作者电影. 由于这个词在翻译成英文之后变成了另外一个理论(作者论 author theory),所以我不知真正的翻译应该是什么.
据说auteur是法文.

auteur cinema起源欧洲,独立电影是源于美国,由制作人体制引发出来的,一批导演想要表达强烈的个人思想, 而美国好莱坞的制作人体制使得导演必须在很多方面妥协(为迎合商业策略之类的),所以这些导演脱离好莱坞等大公司的制作体系,自己筹钱自己编剧自己拍,这是独立电影.

auteur cinema我读得不是很懂,因为资料都是英文的.如果上面那句话的理解是正解,那么它们等同于art cinema...它们大多是中低成本电影,制作之后都是在chains中轮流放映而非cineplex...(chain的中文我也不知),现在欧洲这些是越来越少了,后来被quality cinema取代成为一种和好莱坞进行抗衡的策略存在.

赞同，本章目的就是考察“在当今，两者间的区别已经无足轻重（irrelevance）”，主要原因是后者在独立放映圈日渐衰落的条件下（变为了）备受争议一种商业范畴。
从原文灵活理解的哈。
