Book Description
Husserl has enjoyed a revival of interest in recent years and the Cartesian Meditations is perhaps his most widely read text. The book is an introduction to Husserl's phenomenology and is based on Descartes' Meditations on First Philosophy. Husserl attempts to show how Descartes discovered the 'transcendental' perspective which is essential to any genuine philosophy.

Until now there has never been a secondary text on this important and influential work on philosophy. This book, in conjunction with the text itself, will serve as a proper introduction to Husserlian phenomenology.

A.D. Smith introduces and assesses the key concepts that arise in the book in clear and engaging way. His style is highly accessible and suitable for anyone coming to the Cartesian Meditations for the first time.

Review
'An excellent introduction to Husserl's difficult introduction to phenomenology, providing a comprehensive background to the work and detailed explanations of Husserl's idiosyncratic terminology while relating the work to issues in contemporary Anglophone philosophy.' -- Jonathan Webber, University of Sheffield

'David Smith's Husserl is a timely book which provides an excellent introduction to the Cartesian Meditations and thus to phenomenology as such. Smith displays a gift in making accessible a text that is mostly regarded as highly complex and ridden with philosophical jargon... [it] will most likely become an essential introductory book to any student wishing to become acquainted with Husserl's work.' -- Lilian Alweiss, Trinity College Dublin

"In this amirably clear and well-written commentary Smith takes us through the work Meditation by Meditation." -- Paul Gorner, Philosophical Books

"Smith has done a sterling job. Husserls terms are defined, his ideas clarified and discussed, and since the Guidebook closely follows the structure of the Cartesian Meditations, it really does guide the reader through the text...essential reading for anyone studying Husserls text." -- Komarine Romdenh-Romluc, Mind

About the Author
A. D. Smith is lecturer in the department of Philosophy at the University of Essex. He has written in various journals as well as an article in the Routledge Encyclopedia of Philosophy.
