书名: Philosophy of Literature: An Introduction
作者: Christopher New (Author)
出版社: Routledge; 1 edition (March 16, 1999)
语言: English
ISBN-10: 0415144868
ISBN-13: 978-0415144865
Book Description
Literature, like the visual arts, posess its own characteristic philosophical problems. Literary theorists have discussed widely the nature of literature, while analytic philosophers have dealt with literary problems within the framework of aesthetics or have restricted themselves to topics which are accessible only to a philosophical audience. Philosophy of Literature is unique in that it introduces the philosophy of literature from an analytic perspective which is both accessible to students of literature and students of philosophy.
Specifically, the book addresses: the definition of literature, the distinction between oral and written literature and the identity of literary works. Philosophy of Literature offers fresh approaches to traditional issues and raises new questions about the nature of philosophical problems which literature gives rise to.
Review
"...a cogent careful, comprehensive, balanced and authoritative introduction to the philosophical discussion of literature." -- Philosophy in Review
"A comprehensive introduction to the philosophy of literature, which summarizes arguments concisely and clearly." -- Dabney Townsend, Armstrong Atlantic State University
"This is an intelligent, scrupulously fairminded, closely argued treatment of central topics in the philosophy of literature." -- Peter Lemarque, University of Hull
About the Author
Christopher New is former Head of the Department of Philosophy at Hong Kong University. He is also the author of a number of novels, including Shanghai (1995) and Goodbye Chairman Mao (1979).
