Book Description
This second edition of the author's classic study of Kant's First Critique includes a new preface and extensive afterword.

This second edition of The Gathering of Reason expands on John Sallis's classic study of Kant's First Critique. This study examines the relation of imagination to reason and to human knowledge and action in general. Moving simultaneously at several different hermeneutical levels, Sallis carries out an interpretation of the Transcendental Dialectic of Kant's Critique of Pure Reason. Although, in contrast to the Analytic, the Dialectic seldom refers explicitly to imagination, Sallis shows that the concept of reason in the Dialectic requires the complicity of imagination. Sallis demonstrates that for Kant, reason alone does not suffice for bringing before our minds the metaphysical ideas of the soul, the world, and God; rather it is through the force of imagination that these ideas are brought forth and made effective. A new preface situates the book in relation to Sallis's later work, and an extensive afterword focuses on Kant and the Greeks.

Review
"Composed in sentences of exemplary precision and finesse, Sallis's The Gathering of Reason is the most richly thought-provoking meditation upon the place of the imagination in the Critical context since Heidegger's Kantbuch." — John Llewelyn, editor of Magda King's A Guide to Heidegger's Being and Time

"The Gathering of Reason remains one of John Sallis's most important books. Clearly and carefully written, time and again this book provides insight not only into its problematic, a study of Kant's Transcendental Dialectic, the unwieldy status of transcendental imagination and the theoretical history of the concepts that accompany it, but also Sallis's own methodological strategies for appropriating these issues' philosophical potential. A new preface relates the study both to recent scholarship on post-Kantian philosophy and Sallis's own more recent work. As a bridge between Sallis's studies in Greek philosophy and his recent work in continental philosophy, this is a crucial text." — Stephen H. Watson, coeditor of Reinterpreting the Political: Continental Philosophy and Political Theory
